The Truth About The Y,T,W,L Shoulder Circuit

The Y,T,W,L shoulder circuit is just about everywhere you look these days. Almost every “in the know” coach and trainer is talking about how important it is for posture, muscle balance and overall shoulder health.

The Truth is, they are RIGHT!

The Y,T,W,L circuit is great for all of that. However, the application everyone is using could use some tweaking.

This week I will be focusing specifically on how to improve this popular shoulder protocol.

In my upcoming posts, I will be addressing

- what letter (Y,T,W,L) should be eliminated and why

- The best and worst positions to perform this circuit from. This will surprise you!

- The correct rep range for using shoulder protocols like  Y,T,W,L’s. Its not what you think!

- How most athletes are compensating/ cheating while performing Y,T,W,L’s and why coaches aren’t able to catch it.

- The (REAL)  correct way to position your scapula’s during the shoulder circuit

- And a few more improvements that I can’t think of at the moment. :-)

Your Y,T,W,L Order is Off!

To kick things off, I’m going to talk about order of events.

This tweak is small but it makes a big difference.

I’m not one to beat around the bush so here it is…

Do L’s first!

Why you ask?

Because L’s are the toughest/ weakest aspect of the movement.

It only makes sense to do the weakest movement first doesn’t it?.

Just because its last letter in the name doesn’t mean it should be last movement in the training application!

If you do L’s last, you are already fatigued and are less likely to keep optimal form and/or reach your goal rep number. This is due to the fact that L’s require the most technique and control over the other letters.

However, by doing L’s first, you assure that you are fresh and able to do them correctly for the set amount of reps and intensity.

As as I mentioned earlier, this is a small tweak that makes for a big difference!

Try it and see for yourself!

Post your comments  and let me  know what you think!

Keep checking back as I will hit you plenty more smarter, more effective ways to perform the Y,T,W,L shoulder circuit in posts shortly to come.

Figure Athletes at Performance U

Women’s physique training has been very close to my heart since I was a young kid growing up with a Mother who was a Bodybuilder.

Back when my mother was competing, there was no figure training. Although, she looked like a fit bikini model, it was considered women’s bodybuilding.

Things have changed a great deal since then and women have multiple categories to compete in from Bikini to Fitness, Figure and Bodybuilding.

I’m lucky enough to regularly train a select group of Figure Athletes and Bikini Competitors.

One of them happens to be my girlfriend Alli Mckee. Yes, I’m a very lucky guy!

Check out the video below and discover how Alli used a tire to prepare for competition.

I’m proud to announce that I have two clients competing this weekend in Miami Florida at the Universe.

Please join me in wishing Kathryn Zent and Beth Everret the best of luck this weekend!

Kathryn is competing in both the Masters Figure and Masters Bikini. She has been very sick lately but still competing. How’s that for toughness?!

Beth is competing in the medium height Figure category.

Both of these ladies work their muscular butts off and serve as an inspiration to all of us.

Also, both ladies display prove that at Performance U, we get real RESULTS!

See for yourself and go here to see pictures from Kathryn’s last competition.

Also, check out the picture of Beth below.

I’m taking requests!

As you’ve seen in my most recent posts, Joint Friendly training has been the focus.

I developed the concept of Joint Friendly Training out of necessity.

So many athletes have some sort of pain, injury or limitation that prevents them from doing the basics that there was a need for a different approach training. One that minimized joint stress but still maximized results.

This is exactly what JF training offers… little Joint stress with BIG RESULTS!

See my Joint Friendly Training article HERE.

Its your turn to tell me what I can do to help you achieve your goals using JF training.

Comment on this post and tell me about the specific joint friendly protocols you’d like to see.

I will post the answers here and even show you videos of the exercises I’d recommend for each specific issue.

How to build a Bigger, Strong Upper Body w/ Bad Shoulders

I feel like I don’t know where my home is or what my girlfriend looks like anymore.

My endless pursuit of education has had me traveling back and forth for weeks now. Today is no exception because in a few hours I’m leaving for New York to attend a Mark Comerford workshop about the Shoulder.

Comerford is one of my go to resources for technical education these days. He always manages to deliver the latest and best information on training and rehabilitation.

I’m sure this time around will be no different.

I plan on returning with lots of new ideas and concepts to share with you here on future posts.

In todays post, I’m continuing on with the Joint friendly training theme.

The exercise featured in the video below is called the Angled Press.  It’s a great way to build a bigger, stronger chest and shoulders even if you have shoulder issues.
