    Hey Nick:

I’m a colleague of yours from Rockville, MD. Me and my crew will be at the Arnold all weekend. We’ve got lifters competing in the USAPL (powerlifting) events. Come check us out in the Grand Ballroom. We’ll be wearing the black SSPT t-shirts.

    Cheers!

    Nick,

I’ll be at the Arnold! Have you a booth? Do you know which one it is yet?

  5. Bradford says:

    Coach Tumminello,

driving down from Canada, I will be there for sure.

    Hi Coach,

I hope you get this email. In looking at your other articles on Contrast Training I came across your video dated July 28, 2009. I found something very disturbing. The photo prior to clicking on the video shows a man bench pressing with a thumbless grip. I cannot think of a more stupid thing an individual can do in a weight room. To my knowledge, the only thing that has ever killed a person weight training is having a bar drop on their throat. Whatever benefit that may be derived from a thumbless grip, it is clearly not worth the risk. You are a good guy and I am sure that you will remedy this situation by removing the photo. Every lifter should oppose a thumbless grip whenever they see it. Thank you for all that you do for strength and conditioning.

  7. Sir-
I must comment on the fellow who is so disturbed by a thumb-less grip…If I bench press I utilize such a posture while gripping the bar…I still do for under handed pull-ups as well as over handed-pull ups! I like to throw certain bare knuckle strikes that way as well with the thumb tucked in tight to the side of the tightly flexed forefinger…this is in part due to lack of flexibility and/or the structural integrity of my own personal bio-mechanics…we are slave to structure! It is not incorrect and it doesn’t put one at risk when one lifts…that is silly! Please screen some of the comments more closely as they are not informative and lessens the integrity of an otherwise top notch product! Be well!

    Dear Mr. Hyman,

There is nothing silly about my email. Comparing a thumbless grip on pull-ups to a thumbless grip on bench press is ludicrious. If you slip on a pull-up you fall on your ass. Big deal. Sore ass. If the bar slips off your hand on bench press, broken trachia. Sometimes death. Look at the videos on you tube of bench press accidents. Whatever benefit that may be derived from a thumbless bench press grip, it is far outweighed by the danger. Suit yourself. Forewarned is forearmed.
